Is mandibular tori caused by a vitamin deficiency?

Mandibular tori are bony growths on the bottom of your mouth, just beneath your tongue. These growths are not harmful to your health, however, they can be quite annoying and disruptive to your daily activities, and bother some people.

Some people are born with these and some people develop them later in life. Knowing how to manage mandibular tori can aid in your comfort and well-being.

The exact cause of mandibular tori is still unknown, but we know that several factors contribute to their development. There has been shown to be a genetic component and if you have family members with mandibular tori, you are more likely to have them. It is thought that physical trauma to the jaw may contribute to the development of mandibular tori, although exactly how is not fully understood. It is believed that chronic teeth grinding or clenching can exert stress on the jawbone, potentially leading to the formation of tori. Calcium-rich diets and diets high in fish, especially undercooked or raw fish, may contribute as well. Regular chewing on hard or tough items. Inadequate intake of certain vitamins, particularly those involved in bone health, may play a role in the development of mandibular tori but, like most research it is not fully understood exactly the role these deficiencies play. It is important to note that further research is needed to fully understand the causes and mechanisms behind mandibular tori.

What can you do?

Most instances of mandibular tori are unnoticeable, harmless,  and do not need intervention. However, if they cause you discomfort or pain there are things you can do. Also you can seek professional advice if you notice changes in the bony growth’s shape, size, or color, or if new growths emerge and cause discomfort.

A dentist will use a physical examination and dental X-rays to diagnose and create an action plan if needed for mandibular tori. Should you experience discomfort, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon for suitable treatment options. The good news is that Clove Dental has excellent oral surgeons to help with this condition if it causes discomfort.
