Toothache Dentist

Tooth pain has a way of getting in the middle of everything. You might notice it while drinking your morning coffee, eating dinner, or trying to get some sleep. It may be a dull ache that hangs around or a sharp pain that catches you when you bite down.

At Clove Dental, we'll examine the sore tooth, check the surrounding gums, and work out what might be causing the trouble. We'll explain what we find and go over the treatment options with you before anything is done.

There isn't one single reason a tooth starts hurting. A cavity can cause sensitivity, but so can a worn filling or a crack that's hard to spot. An infection inside the tooth may bring on a steady, throbbing ache. We'll ask when the pain started, examine the area, and take X-rays if they're needed to get a clearer picture.

Why Come to Clove Dental for a Toothache?

When your tooth hurts, you probably have two questions: what's causing it, and how can it be treated? We take time to answer both. We'll listen to what you've been experiencing, check the affected tooth, and explain what the examination tells us. You'll know what we're recommending and why.

What we offer:

  • Appointments for urgent tooth pain: We offer same-day emergency appointments when space is available. Call us if your tooth is hurting, and we'll help you find an appointment.
  • Treatment that fits the problem: A cavity may need a filling, while an infected tooth could need root canal treatment. If the trouble starts in your gums, we'll discuss care for that instead.
  • A proper look at your symptoms: Pain that comes and goes can mean something different from pain when you chew. We'll ask about these details rather than making assumptions about the cause.
  • Care with your comfort in mind: We can use local anesthetic when needed and explain what's happening during treatment. If dental visits make you anxious, please tell us.

FAQ

Toothache Treatment Questions

Why does my tooth ache when there's no visible damage?

A tooth can hurt even when it looks perfectly normal. You might have decay between two teeth, a small crack, or a problem beneath an existing filling. Gum inflammation and grinding your teeth can also cause discomfort. An examination, sometimes with X-rays, can help your dentist find the cause.

When does a toothache need urgent dental attention?

If the pain is severe, you have a fever, or your face or gums are swollen, contact a dentist promptly. These can be signs of an infection or another problem that needs treatment. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately.

What can I do to ease a toothache before my appointment?

A gentle warm saltwater rinse may help, and you can avoid chewing on the sore side. If your cheek is swollen, try holding a cold compress against it for short periods. An over-the-counter pain reliever may also help if it's safe for you. Don't place aspirin directly against the tooth or gums.

Will a painful tooth always need root canal treatment?

No. The treatment depends on what's causing the pain. A cavity might be fixed with a filling, and some gum-related problems need a different type of care. Root canal treatment is generally considered when the pulp inside a tooth is badly inflamed or infected. Your dentist will explain whether it's necessary.

Can I use dental insurance for a toothache appointment?

Many dental plans help pay for examinations, X-rays, and certain treatments, although the amount varies. A filling, root canal, or other procedure may have different coverage under your policy. We can help you review your benefits and understand what you may need to pay.
