How to Make Turmeric Paste for Gums
Turmeric powder is truly a power-house ingredient. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties because it contains curcumin. Curcumin is a non-toxic chemical compound (which is also what gives turmeric it’s bright yellow color) and can help alleviate symptoms of gum disease.
Because it has these properties turmeric is a good ingredient for the treatment of periodontal diseases. You may come across turmeric in some toothpastes, dental sealants, mouth rinses and even in teeth whitening treatments. Turmeric aides in improving gum health including the prevention of gum diseases, gum pain, gum inflammation, and it also reduces the risk of cavities for people who use these items regularly.
The best thing about turmeric is that it is a low cost, non-toxic, and inexpensive ingredient that is available everywhere, which makes it easy to add it to your oral care hygiene at home. Did you know you can make a turmeric-based toothpaste to prevent gum disease?
Warning Before You Try
Before you start it is important to understand 2 things:
- Turmeric has a certain taste that may not be enjoyable to everyone, so you may want to start with a small batch to try it out and see if you like it! Some people add a drop or two of edible peppermint oil to help with the flavor.
- Adding it to your tooth-brushing regimen may make your toothbrush bristles yellow. Some people like to have a separate toothbrush just for their turmeric toothpaste regimen.
Below I will give three different recipes for making Turmeric pastes for oral health:
One for gum health, one for whitening and gum health, and one for prevention and relief from gingivitis or periodontitis.
Basic Turmeric Paste Recipe For Gum Health
You can:
- Just stick your toothbrush into the turmeric powder.
Or
- Take ¼ a teaspoon of turmeric and mix it with a tiny bit of water until you make a paste.
Then apply on your gums and leave on undisturbed for 5 minutes. Make sure to use your toothbrush to brush it on your gums using gentle massage motions. After, make sure you rinse the turmeric residue from your mouth with warm water. We recommend you also brush with regular toothpaste to get rid of any leftover turmeric powder.
Recipe for Turmeric Paste for Gingivitis
If your goal is to prevent gum disease or find relief from gingivitis or periodontitis, you can make this topical turmeric ointment to massage on your teeth and gums.
To do this you need to mix:
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
- ½ teaspoon of salt and
- ½ teaspoon of mustard oil.
The turmeric, salt, and mustard oil will remove plaque on your teeth and prevent further gum bleeding. Rub this paste to your teeth and gums twice every day to achieve the best results.
Recipe for Turmeric-based Whitening Toothpaste
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/8 teaspoon melted coconut oil
- optional: ¼ teaspoon baking soda and/or 1-2 drops peppermint extract
Brush as you would normally. After, you can rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and brush it with a regular toothpaste if there is remaining turmeric powder.
