Advances in Dentures in the Last 2 Decades
The advances in made in dentures in the last two decades have been significant. Dentures that are one-size fits all are mostly a thing of the past. The rise of custom-made dentures for each patient’s individual mouth structure has made a significant impact on the quality, feel, and comfortability of dentures nowadays.
The latest technologies and high-quality materials are utilized to make custom dentures for our patients at Clove Dental. These advances have had a significant benefit for quality in dentures, dental implants, crowns, and veneers to create better options for patients.
Some new technology advances that are utilized for custom dentures include digital imaging and 3-D printing. It’s quite fascinating to think that the first dentures that have been uncovered are over 2,700 years old (found in northern Italy.) Many of the first dentures were created with human or animal teeth. So many advances have made dentures much improved.
In the past dentures were made with the main focus on chewing and be aesthetically pleasing at a cursory glance, however with these advances it is typically nearly impossible to tell when someone is wearing dentures now when they smile with the naked eye. This is due to several factors including that digital scanning has become incredibly precise with advances in technology in this area. Whether you need full or partial dentures, dentures nowadays are more comfortable and better fitting than ever before and are more aesthetically pleasing.
Another advance in dentures has been the advent of overdentures, also known as overlay dentures, hybrid dentures, or tooth-supported dentures. This is when dentures are combined and anchored with dental implants. They can last between 10 and 20 years with proper care and provide increased overall oral function (better outcomes for chewing and speech.) These overlays are still removable like dentures with biocompatible titanium implants placed in the jawbone or remaining teeth. This makes for less slippage affecting speech or bite alignment that traditional dentures had and has the added benefit of reducing bone-loss; a benefit not seen in traditional dentures.
Furthermore, many, many advances have been made in the materials used in dentures that have added to enhanced comfort and flexibility. Incorporating acrylic resins, incorporating nylon for enhanced flexibility in dentures, and biocompatible materials have enhanced the longevity of dentures and, very importantly, comfort and ease of use for function and aesthetics of modern dentures.
